Description
Infrequent power cuts in the oppressing heat of the Caribbean mid-summer are soon to be a thing of the past for the inhabitants of Freeport as the construction of the West Sunrise Plant is to significantly improve levels of reliability and stabilize electricity costs for the inhabitants of Grand Bahama.
When Danish engineering company Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC), known for their ability to deliver “quality solutions on-time and on-budget”, in spring 2011 landed a new contract worth USD 60m to build a 52 MW turnkey heavy fuel oil power plant in Freeport, Grand Bahama, Aqvila were proud to subsequently win the design-build & turnkey contract for the civil and building works.
The power plant is located on a green field site adjacent to the existing power plant which BWSC delivered to the client, Grand Bahama Power Company, in 2005. Aqvila’s works included the design of concrete as well as design, supply and erection of structural steel, cladding envelope, overhead travelling crane, doors and windows.
The challenges of getting supplies to a remote site and meeting a tight time schedule which necessitated an erection period in the middle of the hurricane season, were overcome by our focus on providing creative cost effective solutions and constant attention to detail.
On site a skilled team of steel and cladding erectors interacted well with the local and foreign contractors responsible for mechanical and electrical installations, ensuring a successful multi-cultural cooperation on the project resulting in a project delivered to budget and within schedule.
