6+16 MW combined heat and power plant in Londonderry, Northern Ireland

Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S

Engineering and design of reinforced concrete, primary/secondary steel structures and cladding envelope.

Procurement and supply of structural steel and overhead travelling crane for the Main Building as well as of secondary steel and cladding envelope for the Main Building and various minor buildings.

Danish engineering company Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC) was in autumn 2013 awarded a contract to build a combined heat (6.1 MWth) and power (15.8 MWe) turnkey biomass (wood chip) power plant in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Aqvila subsequently won the design & supply sub-contract for the civil and building works.

The power plant is located on a green field site located adjacent to Londonderry Port on the banks of the River Foyle – close to where the River Foyle discharges into Lough Foyle.

The power plant consists of a Main Building (divided in a Service building, a Boiler building and a Turbine building), 33kV substation building, Wood chip storage building (concrete silo), Wood chip dryer building, as well as concrete structures for tanks and bonded areas, transformers, stack, filters, conveyors, fans, silencers, waste wood storage areas, virgin wood storage areas, weigh bridge, Air cooled condenser and fire fighting equipment.

Aqvila’s works included the detailed design of all reinforced concrete sub and superstructures, including 3D-modelling and preparation of bar-bending schedules as well as design, manufacture and supply of primary and secondary structural steel, cladding envelope, overhead travelling crane, doors and windows.

Focus on providing value-for-money for our client ensured the design of a light easily assembled steel superstructure, prefabricated in sections suitable for transport on truck, meaning that the steel buildings could be erected using bolted connection only.
