Description
Danish engineering company Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC) was in 2014Q4 awarded a contract to build a 40 MW turnkey heavy fuel oil power plant in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. Subsequently, Aqvila was awarded the engineering & procurement sub-contract for the civil and building works.

The power plant is located adjacent to the existing power plants, with capacity of 68 MW, which BWSC delivered to the client, Caribbean Utilities Company, as phase 1-4 in the years from 2000 to 2009. Aqvila’s works included the design of concrete as well as design and supply of structural steel, cladding envelope, overhead travelling crane, doors and windows. The challenges of getting Aqvila’s supplies to the remote site and meeting the tight time schedule, were overcome by our focus on providing creative cost effective solutions and constant attention to detail. All steel structures and cladding elements were shipped from Eastern Europe and designed as elements which could be pre-fabricated in section suitable for transport to the remote site in 40 foot containers.

Aqvila assisted BWSC in the erection process from the office in Denmark from the first concrete was poured to the last penetrations of the cladding envelope was closed. The close cooperation between Aqvila and BWSC made it easy to overcome the challenges discovered in the erection process, such as unexpected existing utilities in the ground, which were located beneath the heavily loaded stack & boiler area.
