Description

Danish healthcare company Coloplast expected that 1,000 new jobs would be created when they inaugurated their new production facility in Zhuhai, China.

The CCM II project comprises a total floor area of 19,000 m² consisting of four class 10,000 clean rooms (each approx. 1,400 m²) with airlocks, a general production area and a warehouse area, a utility and dispatch area, as well as a two-storey administration building. Additionally, the project includes a connection corridor and connection of utilities to the neighbouring CCM I facility.

The buildings, designed to withstand earthquakes and typhoons, are founded on the soft soil of reclaimed land of the Pearl River delta, which necessitated pile foundations of up to 70 m into the bedrock. In the design of mechanical and electrical installations, an assessment of the daily use of the existing CCM I building allowed the introduction of several significant CO2-reducing initiatives, especially within the design of the air handling units for the clean rooms.

BIAD, the largest design institute in China, acted as Aqvila’s sub-consultant, and through careful coordination of Aqvila’s sub-consultants in Denmark and China, as well as Coloplast’s local facility management in China, a design was developed with respect for local building requirements and practices as well as Coloplast’s strict requirements for costs, quality, function and aesthetics.

Scope of services

As Full-Service Client Consultant for the project Aqvila was responsible for all design services necessary for obtaining the construction permit and for the preparation of the tender documentation. These services included project management, design of architectural works, design of civil and structural works, as well as design of electrical and mechanical installations, and implementation of CO2-reducing initiatives.
