Description

Danish engineering company Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC) was in August 2016 awarded the turnkey contract to build a 28 MW biomass combined heat and power plant in Kent, England. When fully operational, the plant will be powered by approx. 245,000 tonnes of virgin wood each year.

Aqvila was by BWSC awarded two sub-contracts; One sub-contract for the design of civil and building works, the other for design and supply of the platforms and support structures for M&E equipment and installations, including normal pipes and high-pressure steam pipes located inside the Turbine building. Aqvila’s scope of work for the civil and building sub-contract included detailed design of all reinforced concrete sub- and superstructures, including pile plan, 3D modelling of the structures and preparation of bar-bending schedules, as well as detailed design of steel superstructures, secondary steel structures and cladding supports, including 3D modelling of the structures. Aqvila’s scope of work for the design of secondary steel platforms and support structures included detailed design of the structures, connections, ladders, stairs, guardrails and gratings, 3D modelling, and preparation of workshop drawings, and was performed in parallel to the BWSC’s M&E design of the equipment and installations.

All steel structures supplied by Aqvila were CE marked.

Scope of services

Engineering and design of reinforced concrete structures for the main building, woodchip storage building, woodchip feed building, ACC, and various other minor buildings, design of primary steel structures for the Wood Chip Storage Building, design of secondary steel structures and design of purlins and girts for the woodchip storage building, woodchip feed building, and woodchip feed electrical building.

Aqvila’s scope of work also included structural analysis, connection design, workshop documents, and supply of steel structures for M&E equipment and installations in the steam turbine building, including ladders, stairs, guardrails and gratings totalling approx. 115 tonnes.
